Menhires
MENHIRES
Menhirs are ancient stone monuments that have puzzled archaeologists and scientists regarding their purpose and meaning. Derived from Breton, the term “menhir” means “long stone.” Artist William Claeyssens explores the mystery of these megaliths through his sculptures, delving into the enigma surrounding them.

About the Sculptor

In my early professional years, I delved into programming and systems analysis, exploring the complexities of computing through my education at the University of London. Driven by a personal need for creative expression, I made a radical career shift, becoming a self-taught artist focused on creating stainless steel pieces for sports boating—a field to which I have dedicated over forty years of my life.
Throughout my extensive career, I have had the privilege of experimenting with various creative approaches and working with a wide range of materials. My initial foray into the artistic realm involved creating automata, intricate mechanisms inspired by techniques from the 17th and 18th centuries. This exploration led me to recreate animals using noble metals and woods. Over time, I felt an innate urge to contrast static forms with movement, which led me to develop my first sculptures. This innovative approach established a dialogue between immobility and dynamic mechanisms, marking a pivotal moment in my artistic journey and merging static and dynamic elements in my sculptural works.

My portfolio reflects a unique evolution from programming and systems analysis to artistic exploration. Trained at the University of London and with over forty years of experience in creating stainless steel pieces for sports boating, my artistic journey began with automata inspired by 17th and 18th-century techniques. My early works explored artificial life through complex mechanisms, recreating animals with noble metals and woods.

As I deepened my practice, I developed a fascination with the interplay between static and dynamic elements, leading to the creation of sculptures that explore this dialogue. My work is characterized by a profound commitment to aesthetics and engineering, merging movement and stillness into a unique artistic expression. Notable installations include the Puente Romano Hotel and the Nobu Hotel in Marbella, where his works are celebrated for both their technical prowess and their emotive resonance.
